Morning ride: HolneLight rain, becoming heavier
2 present: Daniel Houghton, Michael Jones
The forecasted torrential rain did not materialise so the two who ventured out were rewarded with a thoroughly enjoyable spin through Hembury Woods and Holne, returning via Cross Furzes just as the rain began to become unpleasant.

We booked two games of 10-pin bowling at LA Bowl, Newton Abbot. We were all below our usual standard, but Julian was victorious in the first game with 114 and Gavin just beat Luke to the finishing mark in the second with a score of 136.

Morning ride: River Dart Country ParkLight showers
4 present: Julian Duquemin, Daniel Houghton, Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson
The forecast had been predicting doom for Sunday all week, but when the day dawned the rain had largely cleared away and we were able to enjoy a short spin through Hembury Woods, returning via River Dart Country Park and the main Ashburton road. When we got home there was still time for a good game of badminton at Ashburton.

Bad weather stopped our ride once again, so a mix of badminton (at Ashburton) and indoor games provided an acceptable mix of activity and relaxation.

We certainly are keeping fit these days - I'm sure it's healthier to do a good sport like badminton, especially while the weather is so poor on Sundays.

Morning ride: CancelledShowers
3 present: Daniel Houghton, Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson
We really had planned a ride today, but Michael suffered 2 separate thorn punctures within a mile of the start, and then the weather deteriorated while repairs were being effected. Being a democratic organisation we allowed a vote, and the decision took us once again to badminton, this time at Dyrons, Newton Abbot. There was a condition attached, however: next week's ride will be a full day ride if there are no juniors present!

Morning ride: Bickham BridgeSunny and warm
4 present: Dave Hartnell, Daniel Houghton, Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson
After what seemed like weeks of rain we decided to make the most of the good weather by running a fairly brisk and ambitious ride to the South Hams. From South Brent we dropped down the hill to Avonwick and then took the lanes through to North Huish. A local pensioner, out walking his dog in the sunshine, was reminded of his own cycling experiences in Lincolnshire when he was younger, but he politely declined our invitation to join us.

Pressing on through the peaceful village we descended to the picturesque Bickham Bridge where the course of the old railway passes alongside the sparkling river Avon amidst autumnal woodland glades. It would have made a perfect lunch stop, but today we had little time to admire the view. A tough climb was followed by a short spin through the village of Diptford and then a speedy spin along the main road to Tigley and Dartington. With sunshine glinting off every stream our ride ended with Colston road, bringing us home just after 1pm.

It was good to see Dave Hartnell again after his summer fracture.

Day ride: Exeter Ship CanalSunny and dry
2 present: Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson
Today's advertised morning ride was quickly changed to a car-assisted day ride at the start. The new start point was Starcross car park, from where we splashed our way along Powderham lane to the level crossing and the beginning of the path to Turf Lock. The going was somewhat muddy, but the views across the Exe estuary were magnificent on this sunny November morning.

The multitude of wading birds foraging on the mud-banks were attracting flocks of bird-watchers equipped with the very latest in ocular enhancements, so progress along the canal path proved slower than expected. It was 12.30 when we arrived at the Waterfront area of Exeter, browsing all the interesting restaurants and cafes in search of the perfect venue for our mid-day meal. After a thorough exploration of the many cycle paths that lines the canal through the centre of Exeter we eventually returned to the Waterfront to enjoy some very large and tasty pizzas in the afternoon sun.

Riding back along the canal path to Starcross we decided that a few more car-assisted rides during the winter months (with lunch out of course) may not be such a bad idea!

Michael made up for everyone else's lack of enthusiasm this morning by enjoying a brisk solo ride through Ashburton and River Dart Country Park. Climbing Holne Chase he was surprised to see the post van coming from the Holne direction: sure enough, a check of the post-box in the village confirmed that Holne is indeed fortunate enough to have a Sunday collection, putting it on the same status as Buckfastleigh! Return was via Michelcombe and Scoriton.

Video footage from today's ride
The first of our two Christmas Special rides attracted four new youngsters for a fun ride to Staverton. The river was so high today after overnight rain that we were unable to cross to the Island, so we contented ourselves with taking some video shots of the Santa Special steam train and playing with the Aerobies in the park. As promised, Michael produced several Christmas chocolates for all present.

Suitably refuelled, the journey home via Abham and Caddaford was relaxed and enjoyable. Free computer games were offered during the afternoon, and first details of the new Junior Training Programme (to start in January) were announced - see elsewhere on the web site for more information.
