Ride Reports
Holne
Specially arranged and led by Harry, this junior ride threaded Coombe, Scoriton, Michelcombe and Holne, taking in the River Dart Country Park. A simple, well-judged route that showed careful planning.
Landscove
An evening ride plagued by mechanicals never found its rhythm: a broken valve, a fall and chain trouble, briefly brightened by hot air balloons and a couple of good tracks. A long thorn then caused multiple punctures in the dark; with no spare 26in tube, we limped while Gavin fetched the car.
Steps Bridge
A sweltering return to the Teign Valley shaped the day: shade at Canonteign Falls was a rare relief before the disappointment of Christow’s derelict BMX track, now the preserve of lads on scooters. After sampling the Steps Bridge woodland, we took an easier way home—Gage even found time to chase ducks.
Staverton
Another junior outing to Staverton basked in sunshine, with a long halt in the park for Frisbee at Harry and Jack’s request. The return took in some engaging tracks via Sparkwell and Beaston, but the final path from Landscove was so overgrown that everyone ended up stung and scratched.
Holne
With showers drifting in, we stuck to the sheltered lower track through Hembury Woods and made the best of it with Frisbee in Holne Park, Jaden’s catching and throwing raising the laughs. The mood dipped later when Gage discovered he’d lost his waist belt somewhere in the dark lanes.
Bellever 2004 2
Sun and sudden showers framed a first Dartmoor weekend for our younger riders. We hid under a playground slide, then battled a headwind to the Foxtor cafe, where Torbay CTC asked, “which one is Gage?”. At Bellever, dubious noodles, treacle pudding and pool set the tone. Next day a ‘shortcut’ over Sharp Tor backfired, yet we still ended with ice creams in warm light.
Staverton
Another favourite junior ride to Staverton cricket field for Frisbee, this time via a new approach, climbing past Caddaford Farm before the usual games on the grass.
Crofters social
Heavy rain forced the cancellation of the evening ride, so we met at the clubroom for a low‑key social instead—making the best of a foul night.
Looe
With just two of us we took a car-assisted spin along the south Cornish coast, climbing to the Monkey Sanctuary and even carrying bikes up a long flight of steps before rolling into Looe’s busy lanes. Lunch by the river became a stand-off with gulls, before ice cream and rock pools.
Staverton
A determined junior return to Staverton cricket field was punctuated by a close shave with a motorist en route. In the park the Frisbee games peaked when Harry’s pink ring soared out of the park and over the power lines into a field—retrieved just before the light went.
Hembury Woods
On the final evening ride, a dusk run through Hembury Woods became night riding, Michael’s front light steering us past fallen trunks and two stream detours. Spirits stayed high despite Harry’s recurring puncture and pump stops, and we arrived back late.
Dartmouth
Delayed by Joe’s brake repair, the ride became a determined push to Dartmouth via a rediscovered bridleway to Old Mill Creek, where lunch among ancient boats brought calm after a testing descent. It ended with riverside ice creams and Gage’s first bike ferry crossing before the hard run home.
