Ride Reports
Galmpton via Churston tracks
Philip led a lovely route to Churston, then along quiet tracks to Galmpton, with a brisk main-road run home.
Pridhamsleigh towards Staverton
A straightforward evening run from Pridhamsleigh towards Staverton, notable for John Stuart joining Michael, Clive, Luke and Alan for a sociable outing.
North Huish via Dean and Diptford
A short excursion to North Huish via Dean, made distinctive by a return that explored little‑known lanes beyond Diptford—an easy ride with the quiet pleasure of finding new roads close to home.
Newfoundland Cove and coast path
Unusually, Ken actually planned a route, threading quiet lanes to the coast and onto the path towards Kingswear; a rough stretch had us on foot and we scarcely saw a car. A ride that turned into a small discovery, finding new tracks and views so close to home.
Staverton night ride and tandem
A night-ride defined by lights: a few had to turn back after forgetting theirs, while Liz and Simon kept spirits up by riding Richard’s tandem in perfect synchronisation. Later on Colston Road, first-time night rider Robert clipped a hedge and broke his new front light.
Dawlish Water via Ideford Arch
We traced Dawlish Water into Dawlish, where the sunny sands drew many in; the mood dipped later on the track to Humber when loose handlebars brought down Robert and Alex.
Evening ride to Staverton
An otherwise routine evening ride was made memorable by a small triumph: Matthew and Andrew actually remembered their lights.
Laughter Tor via Venford Reservoir
A ride towards Laughter Tor via Venford and an early lunch at Combestone Tor was defined by the shock of Bellever's forest, almost gone after heavy felling. We rolled back through Widecombe and Bonehill, once Alan stopped playing with Michael's pannier.
South Devon lanes from Marldon
A small trio enjoyed dry, sunny spells on an unhurried spin through the South Devon lanes, keeping to tarmac rather than tracks, with Ken guiding Charlie and Alan round familiar roads.
Brutus Bridge via the river track
This evening’s focus was testing Ken’s red Vistalights, which proved quite bright from behind. The overgrown riverside track to Totnes was tricky in the dark, then we headed back via Rattery as usual.
Mothecombe Beach tidal crossing
We lunched at Mothecombe then waded the Erme to complete a circuit; halfway across the tide raced in, submerging the shoes and socks we’d left on a sand islet. Charlie, wary of the plan but not of the climb back, conceded; a stop at Loddiswell café and the shortest route home followed.
Cross Furzes with Rushworth stop
With rain forecast we stayed close to Buckfast. When it held off we tackled the steep climb to Cross Furzes, paused at the Rushworth farmstead for welcome refreshments, and rolled back to Buckfastleigh still dry – a quiet evening that made a mockery of the forecast.
