Ride Reports
Bellever 1994 2
Mist clung to the moor as Eliot rejoined the group, his freewheel failing and friends lending a shove into Bellever. At the hostel, fireside games gave way to Budgie’s grapefruit‑and‑eggs breakfast. When the rain set in, Princetown was dropped for the Wayside café and an afternoon at Crofters: a weekend steered by camaraderie and quick decisions.
Totnes Riverside
The season’s last evening ride became a study in failing lights: darkness on the Totnes cycle path saw Michael puncture and Philip’s dazzling new front lamp die early, forcing a wary return via Rattery. It ends with a simple lesson—bring spare batteries, as the brightest doesn’t always last longest.
Littlehempston
An afternoon loop to Littlehempston, probably out via Staverton and back through Broadhempston to Buckfastleigh, with intermittent drizzle setting a quiet, autumnal tone.
Annual General Meeting
An upbeat AGM reported a 20% rise in attendances, but the key decision was to suspend Paignton local rides—caveated with “whenever we can find a leader”. Despite misgivings about quality, the Ilsington Hotel was chosen again for the Christmas lunch.
Hitchcombe Wood
A demanding ride of contrasts: an impromptu hour on the Christow BMX track, then a tense pass of two horses that drew an irate motorist—handled calmly and without injury. We finished tired but satisfied after fine woodland tracks and steady climbing.
Computer games
Launching our new-style weekly socials, the computer games evening drew a strong turnout and proved thoroughly enjoyable, setting a promising tone for the weeks ahead.
Buckland-in-the-Moor
After climbing Ausewell Hill we happily swapped Pinchaford for the Round House cafe at Buckland-in-the-Moor, then descended through autumnal woods to Spitchwick, meeting former newcomer Mark Barber; later, Tao denied a minor tumble on the Hembury Woods track.
Computer games
Computer games brought another very enjoyable indoor social, a relaxed evening together and a welcome change of pace from the usual rides.
Rolster Bridge
Two ill-equipped punctures set the tone: Neil’s broken valve cost an hour, and Tom borrowed a tube before peeling off at Avonwick. We diverted to lunch at Rolster Bridge among the falling leaves, finishing the day grateful for shelter as the rain set in.
Computer games
The computer games evening proved a lively social, the atmosphere electric from start to finish. A simple, well‑attended night that underlined how much the club enjoys time together off the bikes.
Graetor Rocks
They ignored the forecast and soon regretted it: mud, lashing rain and wind near Haytor turned the ride into a retreat. Eating lunch in the Haytor toilet block beside Duke of Edinburgh hikers, then salvaging the afternoon with computer games, gave the day its peculiar character.
Cinema: The Lion King
A large and friendly turnout made our trip to see The Lion King especially enjoyable: Disney’s tale of Simba’s exile and return to Pride Rock, buoyed by memorable songs and vivid animation. The day’s spirit showed in members who ferried us to and from Plymouth’s Odeon.
