Ride Reports

Dittisham
Sun, 11 Dec 1994

A day of mishaps and resilience: after Edward blacked out in Old Totnes Road, a wrong turn at Dittisham dropped us to the River Dart for an unplanned lunch before the steep climb out. We regrouped and pressed on through lanes and tracks to a swift return.

Movie night: Mrs. Doubtfire
Fri, 16 Dec 1994

Twenty members settled in for Mrs. Doubtfire, a well‑paced comedy starring Robin Williams, about a divorced father who disguises himself as a Scottish nanny to be near his children. Drinks and biscuits at the interval kept the mood cheerful.

Christmas Lunch: Ilsington
Sun, 18 Dec 1994

Christmas lunch at the Ilsington House Hotel was the heart of the day, sunshine filling the restaurant before an excellent meal; Dayle and Budgie polished off the clotted cream despite health warnings. After we battled a headwind to Haytor, with numb hands and Charles’s puncture, reaching Buckfastleigh at dusk.

Indoor games
Fri, 23 Dec 1994

A pre-Christmas club social became an indoor gaming evening, with The Lion King the standout favourite.

Avon Dam
Mon, 26 Dec 1994

Our Boxing Day special traced the familiar path to Shipley Bridge and the Avon Dam under bright winter sun, treading lightly to protect the muddy moor. We slipped back into Buckfastleigh at 12.37, neatly beating the incoming rain by 37 minutes.

Christmas special
Wed, 28 Dec 1994

A warm, end-of-year Christmas special with the club’s camaraderie captured on videotape, as four-player Skidmarks and Pictionary set a relaxed, good‑humoured tone.

Spitchwick
Sun, 01 Jan 1995

Brisk and wet around Hembury Woods to Holne Chase and New Bridge, the ride was defined by breakdowns: Richard Goss’s rear spindle snapped and he set off on foot, and later a jealous Tao evened things up by breaking his chain as we rolled back into Buckfastleigh.

Indoor games
Fri, 06 Jan 1995

Another warm, lively social evening centred on the Amiga, with Skidmarks the runaway favourite and friendly rivalry in full flow; Philip Stone, especially, seemed quite addicted.

Harford
Sun, 08 Jan 1995

With Michael shadowing by car and urging patience, a damp start turned into sun as he persuaded the group on to Harford church. The moor rewarded them with a bright run to South Brent—despite a couple of spills on the final descent—and, with the Copper Kettle closed, a return to Crofters.

Star Trek experience
Fri, 13 Jan 1995

A bigger-than-expected turnout of Star Trek fans made for a lively social, spanning the franchise from the original series to the brand-new Deep Space Nine. A rare animated episode added novelty, and debates over favourites ran on well past the credits.

North Huish
Sun, 15 Jan 1995

A winter morning outing exploring little‑used lanes between Diptford and North Huish, out via Rattery and back by Avonwick garage and Marley Head. The day’s talking point was news that the bells from the disused North Huish church had gone to Salcombe; after lunch several gathered at Crofters for a wash and a social.

Indoor games
Fri, 20 Jan 1995

An easy-going social evening where computer games took centre stage, keeping everyone engaged in a friendly, relaxed mood. Nothing dramatic, just shared laughter and simple fun that made the club feel close-knit.
