Ride Reports
Bovey Tracey followed by games social
A wet forecast forced us to abandon plans for Blackingstone Rock, so after meeting at Chudleigh Bridge we returned to the Riverside Cafe in Bovey Tracey. Tao fixed yet more punctures before we headed to Crofters for computer games and a live CompuServe chat with children in North America.
Snooker: Torquay
A first for the club: a snooker social at the Galaxy Centre in Torquay, a relaxed change from the saddle that brought plenty of smiles. Those who came found it a simple, enjoyable evening, and left keen for more off‑bike gatherings.
Totnes, followed by games social
Relentless rain turned the planned Torcross ride into a social switch. Two who had cycled from Newton Abbot were unimpressed, but a Totnes café stop helped, and after meeting Richard Goss near Buckfastleigh eight of us settled in for extended games and videos at Crofters.
Indoor games
Another very enjoyable computer games evening that underlined how popular the new weekly socials have become.
Broadhempston
An unhurried afternoon defined by a 20-minute wait at Broadhempston’s play park before rolling quiet lanes to the Rising Sun Tearooms, where John produced a personal organiser. A jammed chain and a few hill complaints later, we reached Buckfastleigh at dusk—some still without lights.
Movie night: Jurassic Park
A relaxed video night with Steven Spielberg’s record-breaking Jurassic Park, a thriller about a high-tech theme park of cloned dinosaurs where systems fail and chaos erupts. Many had seen it at the cinema, yet the second viewing was just as exciting.
Haytor Tramway
A sunny moor ride defined by a comic lunchtime mix-up: Budgy missed the rendezvous, John vanished searching, and they rejoined by a back route. Later Luke's scant cream tea in Widecombe added a wry note before we headed home.
Indoor games
A low-key evening social centred on computer and board games; nothing much to report beyond easy competition and good humour all round.
Chalk Ford
Despite drizzle we pressed on, shunning the moor for lanes and rough tracks around Holne. The off‑road urge cost us: Eliot gashed a knee on the Holne descent and Luke snapped a rear derailleur in Hembury Woods, with repairs and first aid back at Crofters.
Ten-pin bowling: Newton Abbot
A booking mix-up turned our night at Newton Abbot’s LA Bowl into free bowling, leaving spare cash in pockets. Some of the youngsters used it to try the venue’s Laser Craze, giving the evening an unexpected dash of energy.
Toby's Point
A day of mishaps became a lesson in tides and cold feet: after a snapped seat pin, delays and a mud-choked drop to Ayrmer’s Cove, the group found the Aveton Gifford tidal road under water, waded across, then limped home chilled to a garage’s warmth and late rescues.
Indoor games
Once again, a relaxed evening off the bikes: computer and board games, simple shared fun and a pleasant get-together for the group.
