Whiddon Farms and Scrubs tracks
Sun, 06 Sep 1992

On a damp afternoon we took the rough, often muddy Whiddon Farms track through farms and wood to the riverside. Keir avoided a blowout for once, but a puncture at the bottom of the track became the moment that defined the ride.

Chuley Cross derailleur mishap
Fri, 11 Sep 1992

Adrian’s borrowed bike came to grief when the derailleur wrapped itself in the wheel, sending him home to think how to explain it. The rest carried on over Chuley Cross and back through the lanes, a quiet end to an evening shaped by that mishap.

Salcombe and Torcross weekend 1992 2

The snakes had gone, and so had the easy charm: at Salcombe hostel we traded last time’s reptile show for a poky dorm while a lone guest basked in the sea‑view suite. After dinner we walked to Starehole Bay, watching two wavering torches across the water and weighing a midnight pursuit. Morning brought a ferry shuffle with bikes and coffee above the estuary, then steep lanes to Torcross and the sweep of Slapton Ley.

Uphempston mud and route confusion
Sun, 04 Oct 1992

Big numbers bred muddle at Pennball Cross: one bunch took the muddy track; Michael’s group reached an empty three‑way junction and searched for the right line. They chose left into heavy mud, while the right‑turners met the road group and the ride came back together.

Haldon Hills rough stuff event
Sun, 18 Oct 1992

A wet, gloomy afternoon couldn’t spoil the Rough Stuff at Haldon: meeting friends from the Exeter, Torbay and Plymouth sections and following Arthur’s well‑planned route kept spirits up, and hot tea with home‑made buns from the van made a warm finish.
