Ride Reports
Elender Cove and Corkscrew Hill
We met the campers at Elender Cove, where the sunshine made the water irresistible for some and the cliff path tempting for others. We called at Torcross and Forces Cross before Corkscrew Hill—declined by Richard and Simon Hopper in favour of the road.
Staverton Bridge via Colston lanes
A gentle evening meander through the Colston Road lanes brought us to Staverton Bridge, where the footpath and river kept us lingering; there was no time for Luke and Budgie to swim, so they settled for stone-skimming before we returned via Abham and Caddaford.
Lustleigh Cleave and Becky Falls
Fearing barbed wire and minefields on the Lustleigh railway path, we instead found easy going before a hot, off‑road push through Lustleigh Cleave to Becky Falls and Hound Tor; Brett’s derailleur failure and a precarious tree‑trunk crossing provided the day’s drama.
Chalk Ford and Scoriton rough track
Holiday absences didn’t blunt the pleasure: we climbed to Lud Gate and rolled across the moor to Chalk Ford, a spot few in Buckfastleigh seem to know. A pause on the footbridge and then the long, rough drop to Scoriton, rattling bikes for loose nuts, made the ride.
Dales, Pennines & Southern Scotland 12
Day one became a tale of delays: a sweltering train without air conditioning, an engine failure and an ignominious push into Birmingham left us hours late into Preston and sprinting for Slaidburn. The warden held back hot soup for us; the spartan courtyard dorm had real character.
