South West Ireland 2005 8

Dumped into torrential Cork rain, we sprinted west, lugged bikes over a fallen tree, then a passer-by cheerfully welcomed us to Ireland. That mix of warmth and oddity set the tone: a shopkeeper later refused to sell ice‑cream after a misunderstood pause, and the Gap of Dunloe was a stop‑start slalom of horse traps. Between island calm and a gas‑lit mountain lodge, big scenery met memorable encounters.

Answering Keir’s call for a longer ride, we climbed to the Hennock reservoirs, enjoyed a quiet lunch by Tottiford, then found Sol’s time off had told, the pace easing as Keir matched him. A stop at Hound Tor made certain of a late finish, yet the day felt like a shared achievement.

Skerraton Down
Fri, 12 Aug 2005
9 mi

A warm summer evening saw a steady push up to Skerraton Down, capped by the group rallying to help Derry on the final ramp, before a quiet traverse across the moor to Cross Furzes.

Spitchwick

We reversed the usual route to Spitchwick, opening with the climb of Ausewell Hill from Ashburton, threading Buckland-in-the-Moor and then plunging down the steep descent to Spitchwick, before returning quietly through Hembury Woods.

Staverton
Fri, 19 Aug 2005

With just three out, we enjoyed a gentle evening ride along Colston Road to Staverton, pausing for a game of Frisbee in the park before heading back via Caddaford. A simple, companionable outing.

Plym Valley Cycleway
Sun, 21 Aug 2005
16 mi

A quiet car-assisted outing on the Plym Valley cycle path turned into a lively off-road adventure when a detour by the Meavey and along the Plym delivered the day’s best riding and a cooling paddle. The return took longer than planned as Joe missed a turning and had to chase back before a late Pizza Hut refuel.

Landscove
Fri, 26 Aug 2005

With new suspension forks, John Stuart urged an off‑road evening to Landscove, ticking off rough tracks and fields. At an overgrown path of nettles and brambles he shot into the tunnel while the rest hesitated; forced to ride back, we instead skirted it and headed home via Green Lane.

On a perfect summer morning, the day belonged to Jaden and his skip-rescued new bike, which carried him briskly to the Avon Dam. The highlight was his first fast descent from Water Oak Corner to Cross Furzes, with a brief paddle at the reservoir to cool his feet.

Holne
Fri, 02 Sep 2005

A simple evening loop: a steady climb up the lower Hembury track to Holne, then a quiet return through Hembury Woods. Uncomplicated and unhurried, the ride was shaped by the climb out and the tranquil run home beneath the trees.

Heavy rain cancelled the evening’s ride, so the group switched to a relaxed social at Crofters instead.
