Ride Reports
Computer games
Heavy rain forced cancellation of the third junior evening ride, but the club salvaged the night with a computer games social that kept spirits up and everyone positively occupied.
Broadhempston
An easy evening ride was driven by simple aims: Glen hunting mud and Dennis the park with the rocket ride. We found both, with splashes on the Riverford track and a lively play park at Broadhempston, where a chance meeting with former member Jenny Grieveson capped the outing.
Dartmeet
A sunny Dartmoor ride became an adventure when the swollen Dart submerged the stepping stones at Dartmeet, prompting a barefoot bike-carry and a dunking for Jack. Revived at Badgers Holt—despite a 25p water refill—the group climbed Dartmeet hill and finished along Doctor Blackall’s Drive.
Hembury Woods
With no real juniors out, Michael needed to get back early, so we kept it brief; the perfect weather still gave us a satisfying spin through some of the more interesting tracks in Hembury Woods.
Chalk Ford
On a perfect summer evening we climbed from Buckfast to Cross Furzes and out past Lud Gate to the open moor, savouring wide views before dropping to Chalk Ford. A detour into the deer park brought us face to face with two calm stags, rounding off a serene ride back via Oaklands Park.
Hembury Woods
A warm evening at Hembury saw the group chasing fresh lines from the top through new woodland tracks to the river, where Joe and Dennis’s playful stand-off became a full water fight, leaving them drenched but delighted.
Skerraton Down
On a perfect Dartmoor evening, a hard climb past Nurston Farm up to Skerraton Down paid off with sweeping views. The mood lifted further with the long, flowing descent to Cross Furzes and on to Buckfastleigh—simple proof that effort earned a superb ride.
Ashburton
A simple evening ride along the old Ashburton road to Belford Mill and the riverside woods was marked by a van blocking the exit, forcing a nettle-scrape squeeze to the road; we rolled back via Ashburton and Peartree just as the rain began. Joe missed us at the start.
Avon Dam
With summer tour training finally underway, Gavin tested a wary knee on the hills to Avon Dam and came through well. A tranquil, warm evening at a near‑full dam encouraged a lingering stop, and the ride was marked by an odd sight on the climb: scattered animal parts, including a tail.
Goodrington Sands
With just Tao and Michael, the day became a leisurely coastal exploration to Goodrington Sands and beyond. A comically slow queue at Cockington’s shop and a police cyclist who overtook Tao as he pushed along the promenade set a light, gently mischievous tone.
Staverton
Matthew’s plan for Hembury gave way to the youngsters’ call for Staverton, and a shaky start from Glen and Dennis improved after Michael’s firm lecture. The mood softened on the Dart with stone-skimming and a Frisbee before the return.
Buckland-in-the-Moor
A longer venture for Glen took the lads to Spitchwick via Hembury Woods, a bracing dip, then the longer way home through Buckland. A dash for a promised chocolate bar drove them up the climb, and both finished strongly and pleased with themselves.
