Ride Reports
Games evening
A small turnout prompted a switch from the planned music quiz to a low‑key games evening, keeping the night sociable.
Avon Dam
With rain holding off, we rode to Avon Dam to find the river in spate and the dam overflowing, the day defined by water at full force. Zac and Dennis’s hedge ambush raised laughs, while South West Water’s rough trench left the approach churned, before a brisk descent home.
Ten-pin bowling: Plymouth
With Plympton closed and Torquay fully booked, we decamped to the Plymouth Mega Bowl. A run of dubious fouls sparked some debate, but it was otherwise a relaxed evening of two enjoyable games.
Games evening
A relaxed games evening where the usual range of PC network games provided plenty of entertainment from start to finish.
Broadhempston
A short, splashy run to Broadhempston defined the day, with flooded lanes and a final soaking shower before the climb to Green Lane. Frisbee and chocolate in the park lifted spirits, and we welcomed Harry Blackman on his first proper club ride.
Badminton: Paignton
With Torbay Leisure Centre the only place with free courts, we headed to Paignton for a lively evening on a single court, mixing doubles with brisk singles. Michael’s challenge to navigate the changing-room maze fizzled out when the connecting doors were locked.
Endsleigh Garden Centre
Driven indoors by foul weather, we swapped the ride for a morning social at Crofters, then tried a car‑assisted visit to Endsleigh. Faced with Christmas crowds and a restaurant queue spilling onto the shop floor, we abandoned lunch, browsed the pet section and returned for games at Crofters.
TV night
A pre-Christmas film night where games and videos kept us entertained throughout; a straightforward, relaxed social evening before the holidays.
Christmas Lunch, Ilsington
Christmas Lunch at the Ilsington Hotel set the tone for a relaxed, celebratory day: some rode, others joined later, and the pool and sauna were enjoyed by 12.25. Over an excellent meal the section received the Devon DA trophy, then most rode back to Buckfastleigh before dark.
Cinema: The Golden Compass
A simple pre‑Christmas outing for two: Vue Plymouth and The Golden Compass, a fantasy in a parallel world as Lyra follows a truth‑telling device to find abducted children and challenge a ruthless regime, with armoured bears and airships providing the spectacle.
Totnes
A pre-Christmas run to Totnes unravelled: Wolfie’s stomach and two punctures turned us back. Toblerone during roadside repairs kept spirits up, and Wolfie felt fine again just as we were too late for the cafes.
Christmas social
A warm Christmas social centred on welcoming John and Callum and hearing the latest from Cheltenham; computer games and free mince pies kept the room cheerful all evening.
