Ride Reports
Sigford
A fierce headwind scuppered our attempt to cross Haytor, sending the group back to lower lanes; only Neil’s blow-out delayed the return. Earlier, Ashley, Paul and Philip had taken the harder Bagtor House route for an extra test.
Indoor games
A planned cinema trip to see Star Trek: Generations became a hastily arranged indoor games social when Michael fell ill; the swift change kept the evening intact and brought some unexpected friendly competition.
Mamhead Obelisk
A sunny ride to Mamhead turned serious when a horse was startled on the descent to Humber, throwing its rider and leaving her with a fractured leg—a stark reminder to pass horses with care. Earlier, a beach game at Dawlish Warren ended with Budgy’s Aerobie vanishing into the sea.
Cinema: Star Trek: Generations
An earlier-than-expected meet to catch the early showing led us to the cinema for Star Trek: Generations, where Picard joins forces with Kirk via the Nexus to stop Soran. Not the best of the Trek films, but a good night—except perhaps for Budgy, who now favours Babylon 5.
Ponsworthy Splash
A relaxed run through Hembury Woods became a Buckland café outing, with a near miss with a squirrel and Tao joining at Holne Chase. The mood shifted when Paul fell while climbing, grazing his arm; Michael took him to Ashburton hospital while Budgy led the rest home.
Give Us a Clue
Once everyone settled, we enjoyed a lively Give Us a Clue team miming contest: Julian’s side won by three points, and the Star Acting Award went to Kim Murray. The evening closed with members exploring a new computer game that let them play inside The Tortoise and the Hare.
Bow Bridge
Two Bow Bridges framed the day: after primroses and stiles on the Sharpham track we found the right one on the River Gara for a chilly lunch, overhearing bold plans for new bikes as Budgy fixed a puncture. Homeward, there was time for tea in South Brent.
Indoor games
Our final social of the season revolved around Master Blaster, a new five‑player Amiga take on Dynablasters; a magazine freebie that proved the highlight with extra collectables and brisk action, giving a lively, fitting close to our 1994/95 weekly meets.
Rising Sun tea rooms
An excellent afternoon ride to the Rising Sun tea-rooms included a lazy hour on the grass and at the play area. Tao polished off a dish of leftover cream, and on the return past Pitt Farm Michael’s front brake broke; he narrowly avoided a collision.
Avon Dam
Perfect weather made the evening ride from Shipley Bridge across the moor via the Avon Dam and Cross Furzes a delight, ending with a careful final descent back to Buckfastleigh in near darkness.
Cornwall 1995 7
Atlantic spray, tiny ferries and laughter stitched this junior tour together. We slipped through harbours and along sandy bays, cramming bikes onto the tiny Helford Passage boat as one rider eyed its licence, then misjudging the sea—soakings at Chapel Rock and Bedruthan Steps. Even a dead shaver got rescued; beach games kept spirits high.
Spitchwick
With Michael and Julian away, Richard led the group through Holne to Spitchwick for a relaxed Frisbee break. On the return through Hembury Woods, Dayle crashed in spectacular style, but fortunately the only casualty was his bar end.
