Ride Reports
Hembury Woods
With the dry forecast proving wrong, we cut the ride short at Hembury, regrouped and took a rough line to the top corner—scratched but all accounted for—then climbed trees in the fort before heading home.
Fermoy's Garden Centre
Everyone was up for a longer spin to Fermoy’s garden centre, keeping focus despite playground temptations and reaching before noon. The real talking point was the new falconry centre, with impressive owls and a Hedwig lookalike; a steam train at Staverton set the tone.
Computer games and trampolining
Dark drizzle ended the planned ride, so we made it a social instead: skirmishes on Modern Warfare 2 and Halo, then bursts of trampolining—simple, good-humoured fun.
South Brent
Showery skies made it a morning-only spin to South Brent, but the group rode briskly up via Lutton to Bloody Pool. Shared doughnuts lifted spirits, before a nasty soaking into Buckfastleigh put a sharp full stop on an otherwise rapid outing.
Ashburton
After rain cleared, a sunlit spin to Ashburton stitched together lanes and paths with superb views, made smoother by a newly installed kissing gate on the Terrace Walk. A strong ride all round, with Callum O’B excelling to make amends for last week.
Dartmeet
A brisk run to Dartmeet stood out for the moorland track to the stepping stones, where Jack let Ash carry his bike, and the hot grind up Dartmeet Hill. A pinch puncture and sealant ruined by a missing cap stalled us until Julian loaned a tube, before a rapid sweep home.
Chalk Ford
Computer club stalwart Lawrence joined his first club ride and impressed by climbing strongly to Cross Furzes. After the moorland drop to Chalk Ford we paused for Frisbee among the gnats, then rounded off back home with the trampoline and Modern Warfare 2.
Staverton
Seven riders scuppered the car‑assist plan, and a nail‑induced blowout for Michael sparked a firm reminder about waiting for punctures after some mock applause. We eased the pace with time in Staverton park, suiting Lawrence’s first Sunday ride.
Hembury Woods
A relaxed evening ride to Hembury Woods was enlivened by the annual Qigong camp by the Holy Brook and a wedding marquee nearby. After a Frisbee stop at Hembury Fort we descended the Slalom track and were home by 9.05; bring lights for next week.
Kings Wood
A poor forecast and low turnout saw us drop Haldon and take a brisk climb up Wallaford Road before enjoying the flowing descents of Kings Wood, back by noon and, against expectations, still dry. Afterwards the youngsters preferred the trampoline and bouncy ball at Crofters.
Badminton: Ashburton, trampolining & computer games
A sudden shower arrived just after Michael had assured us it would probably blow over, so the evening ride became a lively badminton session at Ashmoor, with the two Callums impressing. Back at Crofters we rounded things off with trampolining and computer games.
Landscove tearooms
Once Callum’s stomach pain lifted, the morning turned into a light-hearted spin via Green Lane to the Landscove tearooms, crowned by cake and hot drinks outside and an impromptu Frisbee in the garden, before a brisk return the same way.
