Ride Reports
Holne
Under crisp sunshine, a gentle ride to Holne turned festive with an impromptu stop at the Scoriton Christmas Fayre—soup, cakes and original Star Wars drawings—before a spin through Michelcombe and the play park. A muddy run off Hembury Hill made mudguards seem essential.
Computer games and Tesco visit
A Black Friday dash to Tesco Lee Mill for bargains, then back to Crofters to finish with Star Wars and Black Ops 3.
Squash and badminton: Ivybridge, and lunch at Dartmeet
Wet, windy weather cancelled the ride, so we drove to Dartmeet for lunch, then headed back to Ivybridge Leisure Centre for squash and badminton. The day became a straightforward, sociable indoor alternative to the planned outing.
Games evening
A relaxed games evening centred on Worms Clan Wars, with a few rounds of Black Ops to mix things up.
Badminton: Ashburton and computer games
Relentless rain turned the ride into a simple indoor social: badminton at Ashmoor followed by an afternoon of computer games, highlighted by a lively bout of Worms Clan Wars.
Games evening
The club’s social at Crofters centred on Worms Clan Wars over the PC network, the evening becoming a run of lively skirmishes. Friendly rivalry and plenty of laughter set the tone.
Totnes
After three Sundays off, a straightforward run to Totnes became an unhurried outing that overran: slow service at Morrisons—John’s forgotten Ploughman’s earned a free dessert—and a puncture that fixed itself, keeping spirits up despite the delays.
Give us a Clue
A seasonally themed charades evening proved far more enjoyable than expected, particularly for the younger members. Dillan and Will shared first place, and with high scores all round there were calls for another session soon.
Christmas Lunch: Ilsington
Persistent rain turned our annual visit to Ilsington House Hotel into a car-assisted outing, and a new pool policy barring under-16s meant it was a meal-only year. Star Wars at Crofters set the tone beforehand, with Worms battles rounding off a relaxed, sociable day.
Christmas special: Holne
A festive outing centred on welcoming Gavin back for his first club ride since 2011. A warm greeting from Simon at the Holne café and Dillan’s satisfaction with his new bike—its mudguards keeping him spotless through Hembury’s puddles—gave the ride its character.
Friends of South Dartmoor Christmas social
A relaxed Christmas social brought past and present members together over cheese and biscuits. Julian missed the day but called in the previous morning, and Jeremy Ford dropped by earlier in the week while in Buckfastleigh.
Landscove
As rain gave way to sun, three rode waterlogged lanes to Landscove and met a broad lake by the village. Gavin proved it was deep enough for wet shoes; Michael went through barefoot and Dillan, thinking he could ride it, misjudged it and soaked his feet, after a chat at Penn Farm.
