Ride Reports
Evening ride to Combe-in-Teignhead
A long, sunny evening ride threaded through Cockington to reach Combe-in-Teignhead, then home by Kingskerswell. Stephen’s puncture delayed the return and made for a late finish, though everyone managed to phone home.
Pennywell Farm and Dartington
A sunny evening ride was made memorable by finally finding the new organic Pennywell Farm above Rattery, lively with pigs, sheep, goats and chickens. The mood dipped when Mark and Rohan crashed on loose gravel; Steven took the rest via Dartington while Michael saw them to Totnes hospital—both soon fine.
Plym Valley Cycleway to Burrator
One of our toughest yet most enjoyable rides followed the Plym Valley Cycleway, from a tranquil glade lunch to the pitch‑black tunnel that had dynamos faltering and youngsters whooping. A broken rear axle on the Goodameavy climb cost time, but Burrator and the open moor made it worthwhile.
Knowle and Broadhempston lanes
Matthew Jago’s brake cable snapped—fortunately right outside Dave Robinson’s house in Marldon—so tools appeared quickly and we were soon on the road again. A relaxed lane tour through Knowle and Broadhempston followed, capped by a photo stop above Marldon with Matthew in his homemade T‑shirt; we passed on the £5 pose.
North Park Wood and River Dart Park
An exploratory evening ride centred on a new Dartmoor track through North Park Wood: smooth at first, then stiles, stones, ruts and fallen trunks before we emerged at Holne Bridge, earning a firm thumbs‑up, especially from the mountain bikers; home via River Dart Country Park with swift Anaconda Run descents.
Tigley lanes to Cobberton farmyard
Rolster Bridge was missed after a long Totnes wait for Roger’s brake cable—the lost lever ferrule scuppered it—so we explored unfamiliar lanes towards Tigley instead. Best moment: Michael sent us right at Cobberton and straight into Higher Cobberton Farm, to the chickens’ amusement.
Daccombe double arrow climb
A pleasant evening crisscrossing the line of the new gas pipeline to Kingskerswell, then up to Daccombe after Richard insisted on the double‑arrow climb. Along the ridge to Milber and down the bridleway just before the woods, back through Compton.
Broadhempston and Landscove loop
With rain threatening, we took a tight loop via Green Lane and Broadhempston, turning for home at the first drops and avoiding a soaking. A brief stop at the Landscove playground lifted spirits before the dash back.
Dartmoor Ten Tors challenge ride
The Ten Tors cycling challenge promised a certificate for all ten summits, but mist, drizzle and a split for the Widecombe café saw plans unravel. Andrew even hauled his bike up Haytor, and in the end the best tally was nine.
Berry Pomeroy Castle sunset ride
An easy run through the Blagdon lanes to Berry Pomeroy Castle became playful: riders launched off the speed ramp and the youngsters tried bankside stunts, before a bridleway return under a wonderful sunset.
Buckland-in-the-Moor via Spitchwick
Fit and enthusiastic, the group completed the full Spitchwick circuit via Hembury, Buckland-in-the-Moor and Ashburton; along the way Martin leapt from the rope into the pool, and a Buckland church clock riddle, 'My Dear Mother', left Paul Hedges with the last piece of Michael's chocolate.
Broadhempston Bike Week invitation
National Bike Week’s invitation ride drew an enormous turnout to Broadhempston, the group heading on towards Denbury where Nick Buchanan let us refill bottles at the school on a hot afternoon. There was time to negotiate the track at Knowle before riders separated for home.
