10:15 - 12:58
Morning ride: Holne
Cloudy but dry, quite warm
10 miles
5 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, John Rogers, Will Rogers
We rode out along the old Ashburton road and on to River Dart Country Park where, for the first time, we were actually questioned at the gate! There was no problem of course, so we rode through the park and then up the track through Holne Woods to Holne where we enjoyed refreshments in the café. We returned home via Hawson Court.

Day ride (Car-assisted): Plym Valley Cycleway
Dry with sunny spells, quite warm
13 miles
7 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Jack Parnell, George Rogers, John Rogers, Will Rogers
By the time Jack had been persuaded to join us it was 11.25 when we finally set off for Plympton and parked near Coypool. The cycle path was quite busy as we set off.

What Michael and John really wanted was a good cup of coffee. We passed three coffee establishments near the start in the hope that there would be something a little nearer the centre or end of the path, but we were disappointed: we didn't get even a whiff of coffee for the rest of the journey. Clearly the Plym Valley path is not as well served as other popular cycle routes like the Camel trail. The going was nice and flat however with some excellent views, so everyone enjoyed the ride.

We reached Clearbrook at the far end of the path by around 12.55. Michael was sure there would be a café or refreshment van here at least, but there was still nothing. We were forced to order light refreshments in the garden of the Skylark pub, which was very much overpriced and not at all what we wanted. It's about time someone stepped in to fill the need for a café at Clearbrook.

We headed back to Plympton at a good speed as it was all vaguely downhill in this direction. Now there was a huge queue at the really nice coffee van, so Michael finally gave up and returned to the car park. The youngsters made do with bacon sandwiches at the B&Q takeaway.

This had been an excellent ride, and everyone was looking forward to another car-assisted ride next Sunday.

10:15 - 16:30
Day ride (Car-assisted): Exeter Ship Canal
Sunny spells, then rain from 3pm
20 miles
6 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, George Rogers, John Rogers, Will Rogers
The forecast was dry until mid-afternoon so we decided to press ahead with our planned ride to Exeter. We used two cars to take us to Starcross, then rode past Powderham castle where the deer herd was not far from the road. We had soon crossed the new level crossing gates over the main railway line and were riding up the path that runs along the Exe estuary.

John had never explored this area before, so he and the boys found it very interesting as we passed the Turf Lock hotel and joined the canal path. We soon crossed the canal bridge at Countess Weir and continued on through the River Exe Country Park towards the centre of Exeter. Here John found a new part of Exeter that he never knew existed, and it certainly changed his opinion of the city - the quayside area is a delight for cyclists and walkers alike.

We called in at our planned lunch stop - Pizza Hut - at 1pm and ordered four large pizzas for the price of two thanks to Michael's discount voucher. They were excellent of course and we had several spare slices to take home. The staff kindly boxed up John's pieces, but when he found the box was too large for his pannier rack Michael took it back to swap for two smaller boxes. This time they just gave Michael the boxes and suggested he transferred the slices at the counter. While he was doing this another member of staff knocked the box onto the floor while answering the phone, ruining two of the slices! There was no apology and no refund, so that was that. Fortunately service is usually much better.

It was getting colder and darker now, but we did the usual fifteen minute circuit of the riverside recreation ground and then started the journey back to Starcross as the first spots of rain began to fall. It gradually turned into light rain by the time we reached the car, but nobody complained as we had made the best of the good weather with an excellent ride.
Sunday 27 October 2013
10:15 - 13:10
Morning ride: Dartington
Blustery but mainly dry
12 miles
6 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, John Rogers, Will Rogers, Alastair Shapland
Michael got a call from Callum at 9am saying he had no brakes. The result of this was that Michael ended up taking Callum to BigPeaks to get some new disc brake pads and just got back in time to find everyone waiting to start.

We followed our usual route to Dartington, via Colston Road and the cycle path. The youngsters were thoroughly enjoying the strong winds.

After enjoying great food at the Venus café (the coffee cake was amazing according to Michael) we returned via Staverton and Caddaford.
Sunday 17 November 2013
10:15 - 13:45
Morning ride: Chalk Ford
Dry with sunny spells
8 miles
5 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, Will Rogers
Ash was late, and since everyone else was happy to try out CoD Ghosts on the PCs while they waited it was 11.35 before we finally set off up the hill to Cross Furzes. We were all fast today however and reached the top in record time. We continued to Hayford Hall and then took the track to Lud Gate. From there it was open moorland down to Chalk Ford which of course everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

We returned home via the track to Scoriton.
Sunday 1 December 2013
10:15 - 11:15
Morning ride: Buckfast
Dry but very cold (6°C)
4 miles
4 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien
Our members were not well prepared for the weather today - Callum only had fingerless gloves and Lawrence had no gloves at all! We set off with the intention of going to Holne, but by the time we reached Hockmoor Head both lads had convinced themselves that they would never warm up despite Michael's assurances to the contrary. Well actually Lawrence was almost convinced, but he tactfully kept that view to himself until we had started homewards.

On the way home we rode the track through Hillah Wood that comes out on the Hapstead rode. We then drove to Ashmoor leisure for a session of badminton where Ash, who was late again, met us at 12.30.
Sunday 8 December 2013
10:15 - 13:50
Morning ride: Holne
Dry with sunny spells
10 miles
4 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Jack Parnell
Jack was not up to his usual speed today so it was just before 12.00 that we finally arrived at the Holne café after riding up via Buckfast, Scoriton and Michelcombe. Ash was late again and met us at the café, just in time to have a drink before we set off.

Next stop was Hembury where the autumn leaves looked magnificent. We had fun riding the moat and the slalom before getting home by around 1.50.
Sunday 22 December 2013
10:15 - 16:20
Day ride: Christmas Lunch
Sunny but cold (7°C)
4 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien
Lawrence woke up with a cold and told us he didn't want to cycle today. There were only four of us booked, conditions were cold and the forecast was for heavy showers all day, so it seemed we had no choice but to travel to the hotel by car this year.

We played some computer games, then set off for the Ilsington Country Hotel at 11.45. When we arrived we spent the first hour enjoying the private indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. This was a lot of fun, although we had to share the pool with a woman who kept insisting that we stay out of "her side" of the pool at all times so she could swim up and down without distraction. It didn’t' seem to matter if we were at opposite ends of the pool, just the thought of us contaminating her lane was too much to bear.

Our meal was delicious as usual. Ash and Lawrence had a pear starter, Callum and Michael had parsnip soup. All except Michael had turkey, and the desserts were definitely interesting. Everyone seemed keen to take part in our forthcoming Easter tour.

We headed home at 3.30, but an accident on the A38 near Ashburton delayed us getting home until 4.20. Despite the bad forecast there wasn't any real rain today until 4pm.
Sunday 29 December 2013
10:15 - 13:20
Morning ride: Avonwick
Sunny but very cold
14 miles
4 Participants: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, Alastair Shapland
Alistair arrived early to tell Michael that the road was icy this morning. Evidently he forgot this warning as we set off down the road: Callum was coming up the road as we were going down, Michael was looking straight at him trying to work out if it was him, hit an invisible icy patch and promptly hit the road. Alistair found the whole thing very amusing. Ash turned up at 10.30 just in time to miss the action, although he had found some icy patches on his way down in the car that had given him a couple of near misses.

We had planned to ride to Fermoys at Ipplepen today, but in view of the icy conditions we thought a change of route to Dean Hill might be safer. This proved to be ice-free so we rode to South Brent, bought some refreshments from the co-op and then rode along the Avon river from Avonwick. It really was a fabulous morning now.

Ash had his new Specialized road bike today, a much-anticipated Christmas present, so we kept to roads for today's ride. We took the short-cut past Diptford Downs and returned via Rattery and Pennywell by 1.20.
Sunday 12 January 2014
Morning ride: Broadhempston
Cloudy and chilly but dry
12 miles
6 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, John Rogers, Will Rogers
With rain forecast for early afternoon we planned a shorter ride, going up Caddaford Hill to Staverton and Broadhempston. This time we were welcomed at the community café and were given plenty of time to enjoy our drinks, so Michael and John made the most of the opportunity and had two coffees each.

There was time to play with the frisbee in the park before we headed home via Green Lane, arriving at 1.25 just before the rain started.
