Day ride (Car-assisted): Plym Valley Cycleway
Dry with sunny spells, quite warm
13 miles
7 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Jack Parnell, George Rogers, John Rogers, Will Rogers
By the time Jack had been persuaded to join us it was 11.25 when we finally set off for Plympton and parked near Coypool. The cycle path was quite busy as we set off.

What Michael and John really wanted was a good cup of coffee. We passed three coffee establishments near the start in the hope that there would be something a little nearer the centre or end of the path, but we were disappointed: we didn't get even a whiff of coffee for the rest of the journey. Clearly the Plym Valley path is not as well served as other popular cycle routes like the Camel trail. The going was nice and flat however with some excellent views, so everyone enjoyed the ride.

We reached Clearbrook at the far end of the path by around 12.55. Michael was sure there would be a café or refreshment van here at least, but there was still nothing. We were forced to order light refreshments in the garden of the Skylark pub, which was very much overpriced and not at all what we wanted. It's about time someone stepped in to fill the need for a café at Clearbrook.

We headed back to Plympton at a good speed as it was all vaguely downhill in this direction. Now there was a huge queue at the really nice coffee van, so Michael finally gave up and returned to the car park. The youngsters made do with bacon sandwiches at the B&Q takeaway.

This had been an excellent ride, and everyone was looking forward to another car-assisted ride next Sunday.

Day ride (Car-assisted): Exeter Ship Canal
Sunny spells, then rain from 3pm
20 miles
6 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, George Rogers, John Rogers, Will Rogers
The forecast was dry until mid-afternoon so we decided to press ahead with our planned ride to Exeter. We used two cars to take us to Starcross, then rode past Powderham castle where the deer herd was not far from the road. We had soon crossed the new level crossing gates over the main railway line and were riding up the path that runs along the Exe estuary.

John had never explored this area before, so he and the boys found it very interesting as we passed the Turf Lock hotel and joined the canal path. We soon crossed the canal bridge at Countess Weir and continued on through the River Exe Country Park towards the centre of Exeter. Here John found a new part of Exeter that he never knew existed, and it certainly changed his opinion of the city - the quayside area is a delight for cyclists and walkers alike.

We called in at our planned lunch stop - Pizza Hut - at 1pm and ordered four large pizzas for the price of two thanks to Michael's discount voucher. They were excellent of course and we had several spare slices to take home. The staff kindly boxed up John's pieces, but when he found the box was too large for his pannier rack Michael took it back to swap for two smaller boxes. This time they just gave Michael the boxes and suggested he transferred the slices at the counter. While he was doing this another member of staff knocked the box onto the floor while answering the phone, ruining two of the slices! There was no apology and no refund, so that was that. Fortunately service is usually much better.

It was getting colder and darker now, but we did the usual fifteen minute circuit of the riverside recreation ground and then started the journey back to Starcross as the first spots of rain began to fall. It gradually turned into light rain by the time we reached the car, but nobody complained as we had made the best of the good weather with an excellent ride.

Sunday 20 October 2013
Morning ride: Cancelled
Heavy showers
4 Participants: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, Jack Parnell
Heavy rain overnight had been replaced by heavy showers at the start of the ride. We decided to cancel the ride and run a badminton social at Ashmoor, whereupon Ash rang Callum and managed to persuade him to join us as well.

10:15 - 13:10
Morning ride: Dartington
Blustery but mainly dry
12 miles
6 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, John Rogers, Will Rogers, Alastair Shapland
Michael got a call from Callum at 9am saying he had no brakes. The result of this was that Michael ended up taking Callum to BigPeaks to get some new disc brake pads and just got back in time to find everyone waiting to start.

We followed our usual route to Dartington, via Colston Road and the cycle path. The youngsters were thoroughly enjoying the strong winds.

After enjoying great food at the Venus café (the coffee cake was amazing according to Michael) we returned via Staverton and Caddaford.

Social: Supermarket Special

4 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien
After playing a few games our youngsters thought it would be a good idea to visit Tesco to buy some copies of the new game CoD Ghosts. When we got there the staff searched hard but could not find any discs to go with the boxes on the shelf, so we had to content ourselves with buying some snacks and headed home for a few more games.
Sunday 10 November 2013
Morning ride: Cancelled
Sunny but chilly
2 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Michael Jones
Lawrence made the effort to come up for the ride, but when he realised there were only two of us he thought it would be more fun to have a games social. Michael takes the view that events should be organised to suit members' wishes, so a games social was arranged that kept us happy all morning.
